After water, concrete is the most used material in the world. In the time it takes you to read this sentence, the global building industry will have poured more than 19,000 bathtubs of concrete. By the time you are halfway through this document, the volume would fill the Albert Hall and spill out into Hyde Park. In a day it would be almost the size of China’s Three Gorges Dam. In a single year, there is enough to patio over every hill, dale, nook and cranny in England.
A conventional concrete mix design consists of cement, sand stone and water, huge population growth has placed considerable pressure on natural resources to keep up with demand. Seels Technology (Seels) and Toberite® represents the first fundamental change to concrete for nearly 2,500 years, disrupting the Global Ready-mix market valued at USD $656.1 billion with their flagship innovation.
Toberite® Name:
The name Toberite® has been originated from Tobermorite. Tobermorite is a calcium silicate hydrate mineral with chemical formula found in Roman concrete structures and was first described in 1880 for an occurrence in Scotland, on the Isle of Mull, around the locality of Tobermory. The long-term durability of Roman concrete structures has a greater degree of fracture resistance even in seismically active environments. Toberite® represents the physical advantages from Roman concrete structures.
Toberite® Concrete & Atoms:
Combining new age technology with ancient roman practices, Toberite® revolutionises the concrete industry. Known for its functional diversity and superior strength, Toberite® utilises recycled thermoset polymers in replace of coarse aggregate (mined bluestone). These artificial aggregates are called Atoms, the unique design of the Atoms create a mechanical anchorage within the matrix, self-reinforcing as they occupy their own space under the binding properties of the cement sand and water. The result is a stronger, lighter, more environmentally sustainable concrete solution.
Toberite® is a concrete replacement that uses engineered polypropylene Atoms in replace of stone aggregate. The Atoms are made from recycled Polypropylene are are easily recycled. Waste plastics are also able to be used in the injection moulding process. The Toberite® mix has been designed to achieve maximum performance and structural benefit. The Atoms distribute evenly to stabilize and strengthen the mix without compromising durability and flexural properties. The result is a lighter, stronger, more durable and workable product.
Due to the interlocking shape and weight advantage, the Atoms can be easily transported to anywhere in Australia or globally. The Atoms are made from polypropylene which provides superior qualities and is the most versatile and cost-effective plastic in comparison to other thermo- forming and polyolefin materials. It has good impact strength, surface hardness, dimensional stability and excellent abrasion resistance. Polypropylene does not absorb water and is resistant to a wide variety of acids, alkalis and solvent solutions with a temperature range up to 200°F. It is used in a variety of applications to include packaging for consumer products, plastic parts for various industries including the automotive industry, special devices like living hinges, and textiles. It will last 100+ years, will not rust and can be modelled to suitable shapes to be fit for purpose.
